If you receive a message from IH Mississippi Valley Credit Union, offering $80 to participate in a survey, delete it.
It’s a hoax. If you click the link in the message, you will be transfeered to a survey page in the student-accessible area of the website at Politeknik Ungku Omar, a polytechnic school in Jalan Dairy, Ipoh Malaysia.
At the least, your arrival tells the hoaxer that you are a customer of IH Mississippi Valley Credit Union.
Worst case? You may see your account emptied out.
At the start, it’s nothing personal. The student spammers are simply blanketing the area, secure in the knowledge that a few gullible people will respond.
The hoax was discovered by Comco, a Bettendorf firm that has built an anti-spam firewall for networks called trimMail Inbox. Comco’s Technical Manager, Aaron Gillette says,”Spam isn’t just annoying. It can be dangerous. Our spam firewall is designed to protect users from this garbage.”
