BJ: Novell’s getting worked up over Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 (SLED), and its Chief Chef for Open Source, Roger Levy, has finally decided to share his enthusiasm with the outside world.

In an exclusive interview, Levy told Jennifer LeClaire of LinuxInsider that his team has crafted a desktop “truly suited for the basic business user,” replete with a complete office productivity suite, email, IM, and of course, Firefox.

But beyond its low price, massively superior security, regular updates, open-sourcedness, and sharing the same core with servers so IT knowledge stretches farther… why switch?

Hmmm. That’s a tough one.

Levy says colleges and universities are already shifting en masse, but other First World organizations will take longer… Shifting enterprise systems can wreak seismic destruction. In addition, lots of First World firms are captives of their own legacy applications.

That’s why Levy’s looking to emerging markets, where network philosophies and investments have not yet hardened.

LeClaire: “When do you expect to see Linux on the desktop become more mainstream?”

Levy: “Well, that depends on your definition of mainstream.”

Indeed.

In any event, the new release of IBM Lotus Notes for Linux ought to help things along… just like I told you it would, back in February.
