The question that stymied a room full of Redmond: “Why upgrade from XP to Vista?”
The answer proferred, “Vista is more stable, safer, and faster than XP,” is not the kind of thing that sets the masses on fire. The only part of that answer most can sink their teeth into is faster… and the masses aren’t generally complaining about computer speed these days.
We’ll take a stab at it. In addition to faster search, Vista has flashier graphics… if you buy the right version.
It runs on 64-bit equipment as a 64-bit OS… as long as you don’t buy a computer from a dealer who installed Vista Starter (for OEMs).
It can actually run Unix stuff… if you shell out for Vista Enterprise.
In general, everything’s snappier… lots snappier…
Did we mention that Vista beats OS X in the number of versions it offers? A Microsoftie actually said that. Really.
Come to think of it… Microsoft’s end of the business is largely driven by emotion and aesthetics. They gotta make you have the hots for them.
Take a look at their list. If it turns you on, let us know.

Microsoft claims Vista will be more stable, but we’ll have to see how she flies in the hands of a few hundred million users.
The biggest impact will probably be felt by the anti-spyware and anti-virus vendors who have tried to keep Redmond free of ticks all these years. Since Microsoft’s selling its own built-in solutions now, they’re in for a rough ride.
