Ironic: Exchange used to be the lightweight, easy to install alternative to Notes. Now, Exchange is bloated and complex. It's as unreliable as ever, and it's a beast to keep running. Not to mention, it requires expensive Microsoft-trained people to get it installed.

It's time to abandon Exchange and switch to something simpler. One alternative is Citadel, an open source groupware system: http://www.citadel.org

But every Tom Dick and Harry, will try to administer it! It is a Microsoft product, it is supposed to be easy to administer. Just point and click to viruses and exploits.

Exchange 12 is obviously not meant to be administered by everyone. As an experienced Exchange admin, I am glad to hear that new version will offer so many features.
