It is based on ClamAV and adds a Windows front end to it. It benefits from the quick signature updates and steady real-world advances made by ClamAV. The ClamWin team is also working diligently on adding realtime, on-access functinality to the program, and you can expect it some time next year. For the present, ClamWin is integrated with Windows Explorer, so you can right click your mouse on files that have been downloaded before running them and scan them with ClamWin for viruses. ClamWin may be used primarily by email administrators, but it is also a good antivirus program for stand-alone PCs. Once on-access functionality is added, it will be a tough free competitor for the commercial antivirus software, and, unlike the ecommercial antivirus products, there can be no doubt about the intentions of the development team because there is no monetary tie to the continued identification of new viruses RWS ClamWin is a solid antivirus program.
