WindowsUpdate isn’t enough. You may want to work these in:

  • Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 3a
  • Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 1
  • Update Rollup for Exchange 2000 (KB836488)
  • SQL Server 2000 Driver for JDBC Service Pack 2
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 3 (Addresses Slammer Virus)
  • Exchange 2000 Post-Service Pack 3 (SP3) Rollup Patch 6487.1
  • SQL Server 2000 (32-bit) Security Patch MS03-031
  • SQLXML 3.0 Service Pack 2 (SP2)
  • Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack 3

Searching for a better way? Try patch management. Winnet magazine is hosting a June 24 Webinar “Patch Management and Regulation: Meaning, Measurability and Madness”. It’s a pitch for BindView, but it’s a start. Registration required. While you’re poking around, take a peek at St. Bernard Software’s UpdateEXPERT and Ecora’s Patch Manager.

No matter how you handle patching, you’ll make life much easier by refraining from loading additional software on those touchy, overworked mailservers. More software leads to new trouble like conflicting patches, security violations, bluescreens and plummeting performance.
