“They” are the doughty builders of spyadware removing software. Gator is the 800 pound ?ware pusher that ate them for lunch.

So. Apparently, from now on, you are required to consider software that watches where you go, reports back to the mother ship and pops up annoying ads whenever it pleases… “adware.”
